What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar entirely devoted to committed ibadah (worship) including sawm (fasting). Fasting is also one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which was first prescribed in the second year of Hijrah. Ramadan is a time for reflection, intense worship and charity. During this blessed month the gates of Heaven will remain open while the gates of Hell would be closed and the Shaitan (satan) is chained up. Muslims look forward to Ramadan as it brings with it the numerous blessings of Allah (SWT). It was during the month of Ramadan that the Holy Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by the Archangel Jibrail. The actual night that the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is called Lailut ul Qadr, and to stand in prayer on this one night is said to be better than a thousand months of worship. Ramadan also has an important place in Islamic history as it was in this month that the Muslims won the Battle of Badr.
